What is the best gift of all? Della and Jim Dillingham are about to find out that love is more precious that any material object that people can value.
This story takes place during the Christmas season. The story unfolds in Della and Jim's furnished flat in which they pay $8 per week. It does not mention the time frame, but because the rent and wages are so low, it can be assumed that the story takes place in the late 19th Century, or the early 20th Century.
The main characters are Della and Jim. They are in their 20s. Della is a slender woman, and has long pretty hair, which was her most precious possession. Jim is a quiet man. He had a gold watch that has been a family heirloom. Both value their possessions, but value each other more.
They are poor. Della knew Jim had a valuable watch, but he didn’t have a chain for it, so she sells her hair and uses the money to buy a chain for her husband. Her husband wanted to buy a comb for his wife because her hair was so long and beautiful. Jim sells his watch to buy a comb for Della. When Christmas comes, neither realizes what the other has done. They are happy to give each the other's present, not realizing the surprise to come. The couple presents each other their gifts. Della is surprised Jim sold his watch, and he is surprised that Della cut her head, but both understand that they are affectionate with each other and loved each other so very much. Though each of the gifts are useless to them, they actually discover a more precious thing, love is the best gift of all. 最佳解答發問者自選
